In this week's MEMO in Conversation we speak to Ashira Darwish, one of the producers of 'Where the Olive Trees Weep', a powerful documentary offering a searing look into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people living under Israeli occupation. The film has captivated audiences worldwide, winning awards at seven film festivals and inspiring viewers to contribute to the planting of 1,000 olive trees in the occupied West Bank, a project headed by Treedom for Palestine.

Darwish, a motivational speaker and creator of Active Meditation, brings a unique perspective to the film, having personally experienced and overcome severe trauma, including full-body paralysis from a severed spinal cord in 2012. Our conversation explores the depths of Palestinian trauma and resistance depicted in the documentary, which weaves together the stories of Palestinian activists, journalists and survivors of torture in Israeli prisons.

We delved into the concept of 'ongoing stress disorder', a term used in the film to describe the constant state of trauma experienced by Palestinians, and discuss how this continuous stress shapes the collective Palestinian experience. The conversation also touches on the importance of non-violent resistance, the role of journalism in revealing truths about the occupation, and the film's significance in portraying not just individual stories, but the broader narrative of a people striving to maintain their culture and identity in the face of erasure.

Darwish worked for 15 years as a TV and radio journalist and researcher in Palestine for the BBC, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch (HRW). She is the founder of Catharsis Holistic Healing, a trauma therapy project pioneering a type of Sufi active meditation which draws its roots from ancestral and indigenous knowledge. At a UNRWA shelter, the 'I Love English' initiative is empowering youth to continue learning English, a tool they believe is vital for sharing their stories with the world. Despite losing homes and facing ongoing violence, they persist in their studies, holding on to the hope of achieving their dreams and rebuilding their future.

The former head of Nasser Hospital's Plastic Surgery Department, Dr Ahmed Al-Mughraby, has joined calls for a global strike for Gaza on 1 October. He tells MEMO how he escaped after Israeli occupation forces surrounded the hospital and forced Palestinians to travel through a checkpoint to get out. This, he explains, was the first time he'd seen Gaza since the war started as he'd lived in the hospital since the start of the war to help treat the injured. Al-Mughraby describes 'crying a lot' after seeing the destruction wrought on Gaza by the occupation forces. Read more here: https://www.middleeast...

Al Mayadeen documents aftermath of Israeli fire belts in Beirut's Southern Suburb

https://youtu.be/fvXL5ef9Qe8?si=GB7dc8TDJRg_VQ7_

FROM THE SOURCE:

On Saturday morning, Al Mayadeen's cameras captured extensive footage of the destruction to residential buildings and infrastructure in Beirut's Southern Suburb, following a series of brutal and unprecedented Israeli airstrikes. Israeli warplanes carried out more than 30 airstrikes overnight Friday, targeting buildings in the areas of Burj Al-Barajneh, Kafaat, Choueifat, Hadath, Al-Laylaki, and Mreijeh. Additionally, the airstrikes hit a house in the Jamous area of the Southern Suburb of Beirut, according to our correspondent.

As a result, the Israeli airstrikes caused fires and massive destruction in several sites and buildings in the Southern Suburb, leading to a wave of forcible displacement. It is worth noting that the Israeli occupation's spokesperson had made an announcement that airstrikes would target Beirut's suburbs, condemning residents to forced displacement. Additionally, the targeted region continues to house thousands of Lebanese people as these attacks have remained unprecedented since 2006, when "Israel" invoked the Dahiye Doctrine, targeting residential areas in the region.

As always, the occupation forces' statement claimed that the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon was hiding weapons among civilian homes, but the Resistance released a statement noting it "denies the Israeli occupation's false claims about the presence of weapons or weapons stores in the civilian buildings it targeted in the Southern Suburb of Beirut at dawn on Saturday." In this aggression, the Secretary-General of the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon, Sayyed Hassan, was martyred.
